EPR at a glance

Extended producer responsibility (EPR) makes the business that first places a product on a national market pay for its collection and recycling. For electronics that usually means three schemes at once: packaging, WEEE for the equipment itself, and batteries. Each scheme is national, so the register, the fees and the reporting format differ in every EU country you sell into, and a registration in Germany does nothing for France. In Germany, marketplaces may not list goods from sellers who cannot prove their registration, and in France a marketplace must take on the EPR obligations of sellers who are not registered, which is why listings get suspended without warning. Depending on the country and the stream, a seller based outside the EU may have to appoint an authorised representative before it can register at all.
