Frequently Asked Questions

Digital product passports for batteries and textiles.

What is a digital product passport?

A digital record of a product's identity, composition, compliance and end-of-life information, opened through a QR code on the product or its label. EU law makes it mandatory product group by product group: batteries under Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, and textiles and other products under the Ecodesign Regulation (EU) 2024/1781.

When is the battery passport mandatory?

From 18 February 2027 for light means of transport (LMT) batteries, industrial batteries above 2 kWh and electric vehicle batteries (Art. 77). From the same date, every battery placed on the EU market needs a QR code (Art. 13(6)).

Who is responsible for the battery passport?

The economic operator placing the battery on the EU market must make sure the passport information is accurate, complete and up to date. It may give another operator a written mandate to act on its behalf (Art. 77(4)). EcoComply takes on that work under such a mandate.

What information does a battery passport contain?

It has three access levels: public information for anyone who scans, more detailed information for people with a legitimate interest such as repairers and recyclers, and test reports for market surveillance authorities and the Commission. The Commission has not yet defined who has a legitimate interest.

When will textiles need a digital product passport?

Textiles are a priority product group in the Commission's 2025 ecodesign working plan. The delegated act setting the passport requirements is expected in 2027 and would apply about 18 months later. It is not adopted yet.

What must textile brands do before the EU passport?

In France, the AGEC law (Art. 13) already requires a product sheet listing the countries of weaving, dyeing and printing, and making, plus a microfibre notice when synthetic fibres exceed 50%. Every EU member state must also run a textile EPR scheme by 17 April 2028 (Directive (EU) 2025/1892).

Who hosts the passport and issues the QR code?

EcoComply hosts the passport on its own infrastructure, issues the QR code for each passport and delivers print-ready artwork for your label and packaging.

How much does the passport service cost?

It is priced per project after a readiness check. The quote depends on the number of models or products, the markets you sell in and how much data is already in your compliance file.
