The Batteries Regulation at a glance
Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 replaced the old Batteries Directive and has applied since 18 February 2024, with its obligations phasing in over several years. It covers every battery placed on the EU market, from portable cells to industrial and electric vehicle batteries, including the batteries built into your products. For electronics manufacturers the key date is 18 February 2027, when portable batteries in appliances must be removable and replaceable by the end user. Battery labelling, the battery passport for larger batteries and a separate battery EPR registration in each country also apply. Supply chain due diligence has been postponed to 18 August 2027. Much of the detail still sits in implementing acts that are being adopted now.
